WHAT IS EXTERNAL COUNTERPULSATION?

External Counterpulsation (ECP) is a non-invasive medical treatment that involves the application of inflatable cuffs, which are then sequentially inflated and deflated in synchronization with the cardiac cycle. The treatment is also known as Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP). Angiogenesis, which is the process of developing new arteries in the heart, can improve vascular and heart function and is a painless, 100% effective, and safe procedure. It is very beneficial and the best therapy as compared to bypass surgery or stents.

During ECP, the cuffs inflate with air during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle (when the heart is at rest and filling with blood), which increases the blood flow to the coronary arteries and other vital organs. As the cuffs deflate during systole (when the heart is contracting and pushing blood out), the blood is forced back toward the heart, reducing the workload on the heart and improving circulation throughout the body.

ECP is typically used to treat patients with chronic angina, heart failure, or other cardiovascular diseases that have not responded to conventional therapies. It is a safe and effective treatment that does not require anaesthesia or surgery.

HOW DOES EXTERNAL
COUNTERPULSATION WORK?

External Counterpulsation (ECP) involves the use of inflatable cuffs placed on the legs, which are sequentially inflated and deflated in sync with the cardiac cycle. Ideally, therapy sessions last an hour and are finished in two months.  During inflation, blood is pushed from the lower legs and buttocks towards the heart, increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the heart and other organs. During deflation, the cuffs relax, allowing for increased blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. ECP reduces the workload on the heart and improves circulation, making it an effective treatment for certain cardiovascular conditions. The number of sessions with the greatest effect on cardiovascular outcomes has been demonstrated to be 35.

BENEFITS OF EXTERNAL COUNTERPULSATION

External Counterpulsation (ECP) therapy has the potential to have systemic effects or be beneficial for the entire body.

The primary reasons for therapy are:
1) ECP helps the heart function.

2) ECP helps artery function.

3) ECP induces angiogenesis, the growth of new arteries, to improve blood flow and build a cardiac bypass in the heart.

Our patient’s report:

  • Increased energy and stamina
  • Reduction or elimination of angina
  • Decreased shortness of breath
  • Decreased nitroglycerin and medication use
  • Improvements in systolic and diastolic blood pressure
  • Ability to rest and sleep better
  • They can get back to activities they thought they were going to give up forever.

Overall, ECP is a beneficial therapy for patients with cardiovascular diseases, providing symptom relief and improving heart function without the risks associated with surgery or medication.
